AI Conversational Agents for Math

The "AI Conversational Agent for Math" project explores the impact of shared book reading using AI voice assistant technology on children's engagement and learning. This project was created by Jisun Kim a student from the Department of Human Development and Family Science at Virginia Tech.

Overview

The system leverages Google’s Dialogflow in conjunction with a user interface to guide children through the process of reading a storybook with content related to Math.

Contributions

I began my involvement with this project in 2022.

My role primarily entailed leading, advising, and supporting undergraduate students as they designed the user interface that integrated with Dialogflow.

During the summer of 2023, I also assisted in deploying the system and preparing it for user studies. My primary responsibility in this project was technical, focusing on the development of tools necessary to validate the learning effects of using AI voice agents for math education.

Results

Right now, we are running user studies with children to evaluate the system.

Such efforts are being led by Dr. Koeun Choi and Jisun Kim from the CoDes Lab at Virginia Tech
